Visit the Passage Pommeraye | Nantes
Want to do some shopping during your stay in Nantes? Then head for the Passage Pommeraye!
A masterpiece of Nantes history
This famous passage was dreamed up by Louis Pommeraye, a young notary, who wanted to have the most luxurious shops within easy reach. It took King Louis-Philippe 3 years to build the Passage Pommeraye while managing conflicts with local residents.
A difference in level of almost 10 metres on a hillside of sand and rock also gave the last king of France difficulty in consolidating the work.
The inauguration took place in 1843. Sixty shops were brought together and the passageway quickly became a landmark for the wealthy people of Nantes.
Despite obvious crises over the centuries, the Passage Pommeraye invented an activity so common in the 21st century: window shopping. Nantes quickly became a fashionable place for the French bourgeoisie.
